HOW IT ALL BEGAN
Zumba is an exhilarating, effective, easy-to-follow, Latin-inspired, calorie-burning dance fitness program created by Colombian dancer and choreographer Alberto “Beto” Perez during the 1990s. He was an aerobics instructor but came to class one day having forgotten his music. Instead he turned on the music he had been playing in his car, and improvised with his own moves. Needless to say, the students LOVED it, and so Zumba was born! In 2001, Beto partnered with Alberto Perlman and Alberto Aghion, and together, the three “Beto’s” released a series of fitness videos sold via infomercial. The company then expanded into class instruction and by 2015, according to Perlman, there were 14 million Zumba students in 186 countries, incorporating a multitude of dance styles such as cumbia, salsa, merengue, mambo, flamenco, chachacha, reggaeton, soca, samba, hip hop music, axé music and tango. These dances are specially choreographed to incorporate strength and fitness into each routine; the result being a fun-packed party that will get you fit and toned, help you lose weight and keep it off, improve your mental and physical health, boost your self-confidence and open you up to a whole new warm and caring community that will become your Zumba Family.
